Patrick Smith
Senior Growth Product Designer who codes, from onboarding to paywalls and checkout.
A good product makes being human a little more awesome. Twenty-five years in, I work in the codebase with Claude and open PRs engineers review, so what I hand over is realistic to build and I can say why a decision went the way it did. AI is a daily tool for me now, same as Figma.

vidIQ is a YouTube growth and analytics platform on web, iOS, and Android. Enterprise customers include Netflix, NVIDIA, Nintendo and ESPN. Exact figures stay with vidIQ.
Head of Product (Engineering) Tony Hui “Pat consistently delivered quality work, including many successful AB tests in new user onboarding funnels. He takes the time to understand users and design around what they actually need. Great colleague to work with!”
- Purchases run higher with the onboarding welcome video than without it. I animated it in Rive, from a storyboard built with growth.
- The channel authentication retry came back positive on both completion and purchases, so it shipped across the product. I found people dropping out of the Google OAuth flow in session recordings and designed it.
- Purchases went up and churn came down on the subscription funnel, plans and credits through checkout, which I designed with the growth team and ran as A/B experiments off user research. I reviewed the page our PM built himself with Claude.
- TJ Rakowsky, head of partnerships, credits the partner pages with helping turn that channel into one of vidIQ’s main revenue drivers. I drew the landing pages that bring folks in, events and coaching through to enterprise and the creator partner program. My last redesign won its experiment by a wide margin once the engineer merged the fixes from my QA write up.
- Designed early versions of the prompt bar for AI tools like AI Coach, backed by competitive research across the space. First designer on Clipping, the tool that cuts long videos into shorts, and its paid flow.
- Gravity, vidIQ’s design system, made with product and engineering. I was its design DRI, and the front-end engineer and I worked out the component guidelines together. I set up Claude Design against the same components and tokens, so anyone in the org could put out on-brand pages.
- Reviewed other designers’ work in weekly crits. Paired with a junior designer on Figma and design.

Hundreds of projects across product, brand, and e-commerce, most of the stores on Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce and WordPress. Nearly all of them repeat clients and referrals, several running ten years and longer.
Time Boss Founder Andrew Hartman “Pat Smith makes things happen. He is a go-to partner when I need user experience designed and implemented right the first time. He is 100% solution-oriented, and is a humungous advocate for the user.”
- Way Basics. Storage and furniture from recycled board. Founder Jimmy Chiang: “Pat designed and built our first mobile version which boosted sales. His abilities as a designer and knowing the technical side helped us grow Way Basics.”
- Sevenly. The client saw sales rise against the old store, with less server upkeep, after the 2014 move off Magento onto Shopify, built in code on the test site, custom blocks through account and checkout, with the mobile experience and the emails.
- WrinkleMD. Two Magento storefronts, consumer and practitioner, where I ran the platform as well as designing it.
- URB-E. A last-mile electric scooter out of Pasadena. A custom product configuration tool I designed and implemented, mapped to their inventory, with orders going into NetSuite. Shopify POS ran the counter.
- My Custom Cleanse. A personalized supplement company still running twelve years on. I did the brand, designed the questionnaire that picks a client’s supplements, customized the admin for processing orders, and moved the store from Magento 1 to 2.
- SimplyWin / Accelerate Well. A B2B platform companies used to track their goals and keep their teams on the same page. Their first design function, from the mark to the dashboards, working in the code with the one engineer on it.
Senior DesignerCaliber Media Group
2006 - 2011Santa Ana, CAAdobe Creative Suite, Flash and ActionScript, HTML, CSS, jQuery, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin
An agency with proprietary commerce, CMS and email campaign platforms, built in-house for enterprise accounts. Clients from TYR and Schuberth to the Motorcycle Industry Council, Hope International University and the U.S. Marine Corps.
MODEFORGE President Mark Senefsky “I've had the pleasure of working with Patrick for decades, and he's one of the most insightful product designers I know. He has a rare ability to see past the surface and catch what others miss, whether it's a hidden user need or a smarter way to solve the problem.”
- The Caliber platform. Co-built CaliberCommerce, CaliberCMS and CaliberConnect with the development manager, plus the front-end template system every client site ran on.
- Cheapbats. A baseball bat retailer, redesigned for mobile. Tier-one search positions over Amazon, Dick’s and the manufacturers.
- Hyundai. Dealer training that used to mean traveling to every dealership, run instead as a three to four day live stream with moderated question and answer. 1,675+ concurrent viewers.
- Reborn Cabinets. A kitchen and bath remodeler on the CMS, where the gallery, the catalog and the design center all fed one request-a-consultation flow.
- Colorado PTAC. Brand and website for a government-funded procurement program, and my first Section 508 work.
Creative DirectorChild Development Inc
1999 - 2006Irvine, CAAdobe Creative Suite, Flash, HTML, PHP, jQuery, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, DVD authoring
A California childcare organization, now Catalyst Family. Accredited centers across four regions, most on elementary campuses under the host school’s name. I stayed on contract with them for years after.
- Built the company’s website, coding it myself. Parents could find a center near them and start an application, with a page for every program and the corporate side behind it.
- Taught Photoshop, Illustrator and design in each region, so staff handled their own print requests and district approvals and kept the brand.
- Ran creative and marketing for enrollment across all the programs, with the vendors, ordering and budgets that came with it. Every piece went out in English and Spanish, in all four regions.
- Set up new centers as the company expanded into Riverside County, Lake Mathews among them, each one opening on brand.
